Why spend or save money for the long haul
I was listening to the Laura Ingraham Show on Monday and she was talking about her BFF’s mom passing with cancer and the road they are traveling. This was after my mom sadi that my grandma is giving up with life and is ready to sleep. This got me to thinking. No, I am not going to get all sappy on you and tell you all about death and how to greave. But I am going to talk about why you should save and spend for the long haul.
Why you should you save for the long run:
- You will eventually want to retire. You can’t do this without prior planning.
- You never know if you will stay healthy. You might need a few months household expenses for a rainy day.
- What if you loose your job. These days, there is not a lot of security these days.
- Retirement homes/communities aren’t cheap. If you haven’t gotten your finances set up correctly, you will loose more than just yoru home to pay for it.
- College is not cheap either. My kids will cost me more than my mortgage most likely by the time they are in college.
Why you should spend some before you pass on (this is only after you retire):
- Face it, you can’t take it with you.
- Your kids will be just fine if you don’t leave them millions. If they need it that bad, they will not be wise with it when you give it to them this way. Trust me.
- Life at this point is too short not to do what you want. Enjoy what is left.
- Your grandkids are worth it. My grandma used to buy my clothes and take me shopping when I wanted it. It was so much fun.
- Spend just enough to make sure you will still have enough for a long life.
- Now is the time to go through your end life crisis. Get that car you want.
The moral of that story is to find the happy medium that suits your lifestyle. I want to leave my kids just enough to get them through college and pay for my funeral if I die before they grow up and can support themselves. But after that, I want to think that I did a good enough job that they will be able to stand up for themselves and not need my passing to get them out of a hole. I hope and pray that I have many more days with my grandma. But after already loosing my grandfather, I have learned that I would rather give back everything he left us just to have one more day to spend with the wisest man I have ever met next to my DH and God. That is an incredible ranking in my eyes.
Just a few ramblings as I am looking at loosing one of the most important women in my life. I know there will, unfortunately, be an ugly battle for her earthly possessions and I think that is awful. OK, I am leaving now.
