What kind of foods can you freeze
I just paid $4.49 for a gallon of milk. Let me just tell you how painful that was. So I got in my mind that if milk was ever on sale, I would buy it and then freeze it. But my DH says he won’t drink it if it was frozen. I have half a mind to try and see if he even notices. But then I got to thinking. What else can you freeze and not ruin the integrity of the food itself. Well, of course, I went to one of my favorite frugal websites and found the answer. So according to Erin, here are some great foods to freeze. Bet you will find some surprises.
- Eggs - mix them and freeze them in ice cubes.
- Milk - take out about a cup so it won’t explode when frozen.
- Butter - leave it as is.
- Bananas - Leave them in the peel and expect the peel to blacken. The banana should be fine.
- Celery - Do you know how to flash freeze?
- Tomatoes - Freeze on a tray and then transfer to a bag/container.
There are more items, but I found these particularly useful. Well, except the bananas. Just the smell of a ripe banana, unfortunately, makes me hurl. You can forget eating one. I am getting better now that I have kids but they are still painful.
Erin also gives you tips on what foods not to freeze as well. Enjoy.

I have one to add to the DO NOT FREEZE column! Take it from me, a block of cheese does not thaw well. Shred it first! We tried to stockpile it and luckily we only had 2 blocks that we ended up tossing. We have frozen milk and it’s fine, it just takes a while to defrost completely. It’s not as good when half thawed! Sometimes my hubby can’t wait and he always regrets it! Every now and then we can get 99cents a gallon or a register coupon for a free one, so it comes in handy to freeze it. Thanks for the tips about eggs and tomatoes though, I hadn’t thought about them.

I like to freeze uncooked bacon and sausage. Orange and lemon peels (for the zest). Also bread if I make it to the day old bread store, so I can stock up. Cilantro, lunch meat, and the usual suspects like soup, veggies, meat, make ahead meals like lasagna, muffins, breads, pancakes, waffles, homemade uncrustables. I only freeze bananas if I don’t plan on eating them out of the peel. They are perfect for banana bread and muffins.

I have frozen many things in my time and hardly ever regretted it. In fact, the freezer can be a great place to hide things too. Burgulars will never steal your ice-cream!!!
I can tell you with great authority that cheese freezes perfectly well, thank you. Bananas don’t though. Avoid freezing tropical fruit at all costs!!
Now finally, can someone please tell me what an uncrustable is? I simply won’t sleep until I find out.

Dave: Uncrustables are frozen peanut butter & jelly sandwiches made by Smuckers. Now you can sleep. ;)

Uncrustables can now be grilled cheeses as well. Turkey Butt loves them!

I might have to give the banana one a try. They always seem to go bad on us before we can finish them all.

Yep, I freeze bananas when they’re on the brink of going brown. Then you pull them out just in time to make banana bread, and they are SOOOO perfect for that. Just squeeze ‘em into the measuring cup and go.
I also have frozen fresh chopped herbs. Parsley works very well. I don’t need the whole bunch, nor will I go through that much in a whole year probably, but when you freeze it and put it in a zip top bag, it stays good for a long time!

I cut up and freeze onions and green peppers. They are great in soups and stews but they will be too soft for salads and such.
