Want to be a HERO?
My friend, Nicole has asked if I might introduce you to HERO. It is a program that allows teenagers to become ambassadors to Africa this summer. They are looking for 20 students from the US and Canada to join them. If you are interested, here is the info.

During their trip, the Youth Ambassadors will help to build classrooms, construct fences, install kitchens (for in-school feeding programs), paint existing school structures, and engage in classroom and recreational activities funded in-part by Protecting Futures, a program by beinggirl.com founding brands Tampax and Always, dedicated to helping keep girls in Southern Africa in school.
Call to Action: Teens interested in applying can log onto being girl from December 17th, 2007– March 1st, 2008. The application includes submitting a 300-word essay and two letters of recommendation. If you are awarded the title of HERO Youth Ambassador, you will be required to raise a minimum of $5,000 to cover your trip expenses.
Currently it is not uncommon for girls in sub-Saharan Africa to miss four days of school per month because they lack the basic necessity of sanitary protection and other resources to manage their periods, putting them far behind in their studies, which often leads to them to dropping out altogether. Protecting Futures is a comprehensive care program which will bring puberty education, traveling health educators, nutritious feeding programs, educational support services, a pad distribution program across nine schools in the first year.
