Wal-Mart has no more layaway after this year.

by kellys on September 26th, 2006

Speaking of Christmas shopping and Holidays, how many of you out there put presents on layaway? My girlfriend, Emily, puts just about all of her Christmas (she has 4 kids) on layaway to start. Then she pays for it a little at a time and her kids have a nice Christmas. Wal-Mart is usually her shopping place of choice. Not any more!

Wal-Mart is now officially un-frugal. They have decided to scrap the layaway program. According to a Wal-Mart spokesman, it isn’t cost effective any more. Now they want lower income people to use their credit cards that have no interest for the first 6-12 months to buy with instead of layaway. I usually don’t bash Wal-Mart in a serious way, but this time I am not very happy.

I don’t use layaway, but that does stink. I don’t agree with encouraging people to use credit cards.

I am starting to lose interest in the Walmart Giant and have started to shop elsewhere. They just have no integrity and don’t care much for the quality of human life except for themselves and money.

There are so many other alternatives as “Frugal For Life” has pointed out for saving and shopping. I’ve found the internet to be a tremendous resource for saving especially when an item is discounted, tax-free, and shipped free.

I agree that there are other ways to work the holidays. However, I just think that Wal-Mart is making a huge mistake by not taking care of the little man. I don’t care for Target for personal reasons but I might have to change my mind.

I personally think that if someone can’t afford to either pay for it then or save the money over time, then they can not afford the gift.

I refuse to shop at Walmart anymore after overcrowded stores, extremely rude staff and not so low prices.

[…] As we’re shopping through Wal-Mart I see this long line of people.  The line starts at the layaway department (soon to be obsolete) and continues through the photo lab and into the aisle.  The small crowd standing in line looks tired, on a mission, and ready to hurt someone.  They look antsy and they have even taken chairs from the furniture department to sit on.  […]

I usually buy 85% of my Christmas stuff at Wal-Mart, this year I refused to buy ANY Christmas anything from there. I usued layaway not only as a convience but as a way to hide gifts from family members. So if they don’t have layaway I just quit buying gifts at Wal-Mart. It really sucks for the working stiffs, like myself. I start very early and buy up until Christmas. I have tons of peolpe to buy for and Wal-Mart is a great value, but I need layaway to do that.
