Today’s Deals and Some Thoughts
Today has been a busy day. I took Alligator to her doctor’s appointment and then checked her into school. Then Cuddlebug and I headed out to the stores to do some grocery shopping.
Our first stop was Food Lion. Here’s what we found:
- Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes are buy 1 get 1 free. I’m not a big fan of all the sugary taste, but hubby likes them. We got 2 boxes for $3.60. I didn’t have a coupon. :(
- Food Lion brand elbow macaroni is on sale for .59 each. I picked up 2 boxes. A few weeks ago I made macaroni salad for church and I got a lot of compliments on it. We’re having another dinner tomorrow night, so I think I’ll make it again.
- Chuck roast is also on sale. The price probably depends upon where you live. I purchased the roast to put in the freezer for later. I’ll probably use it to make Mexican beef for taquitos, burritos, or some other Mexican dish.
- Ritz crackers are buy 1 get 1 free. I picked up a box of the whole wheat because I know they’re better for you and I also got a box of the Spring ones. They have cute designs on them. Perhaps I’ll use them for my jewelry party.
- Birds Eye Steamfresh vegetables were $1.00 each, which is half price. There was also a .35 SmartSource coupon hanging on the freezer door. I got 2 bags for .65 each.
- My Food Lion is running a milk special. Buy 6 gallons and get 1 gallon free. They give you milk tickets to turn in. Today I got my 2nd free gallon. Of course, if you have an Aldi in your area, it is probably cheaper to get it there. Aldi is not in my regular route, so I don’t buy my milk there very often.
I was a bit annoyed because Food Lion has Wisk on sale for $3.99. I wanted to stock up on the Wisk free, but they’re not carrying it anymore. Lowe’s Foods isn’t carrying the Wisk free either, so I’m wondering if they’re making it anymore. I’m going to be sad if they’re not. :( I was also annoyed because I wanted to pick up some of the Smithfield ham slices that were BOGO free, but the slices are about 2-3 times thicker than usual. What is up, Smithfield?
After we left Food Lion, I ran into a local grocery store on my way home. They have ground turkey for $1.38/lb. I bought a few packages to mix in with our ground beef. Shhh, don’t tell anyone in my house about that. I also picked up a cucumber that was on sale, which I’ll use for the macaroni salad.
I spent about $30 today on groceries. For the most part, I did not buy things that will be consumed right away. What seems to save me the most amount of money is stockpiling things at rock bottom prices. Then I just go to the store and pick up a few things that we need, along with some other sale items.
Before you go to the grocery store, take a look in your freezer and cabinets. See what meals you can make with what you have or by just picking up a few items to go with it. You’ll be surprised at how much money you can save.
Cuddlebug and I came home and he played with puzzles while I unloaded the groceries. For lunch I had leftover cheesy chicken croissants, which were yummy! Tonight I think we’re having meatloaf, fried squash, and mashed potatoes.
What have you been up to? How are you doing with saving money?

Nothing in our area beats Food Lion’s price on milk. Not even Aldi. I haven’t been really impressed with Aldi. But Food LIon rocks. I will be heading there tomorrow. I also have $1 off 2 Bird’s Eye Veggies so that makes them free. And I have a $5/$25 purchase that Food Lion sent in the mail. I’m going to try to stock up on a Little meat and produce while I’m there. Thanks for posting all the deals you find.

i keep hearing people talking about cheap ground turkey, but everywhere i have near me charges more for ground turkey than ground beef. i don’t have a food lion or kroger or meijer or any of those i hear people talking about, though:( i have aldi, but it’s 10 miles away, so it’s not worth it.

Hi! I stumbled upon your blog a few days ago, subscribed and have been reading it since. I really enjoy everything that I’ve read so far. It’s nice to not have to worry about missing out on a really great sale.
We don’t have Food Lions in the area. Just Albertsons, Super1, and Winn Dixie……Walmart also, but my family has chosen to spend our money elsewhere.
Thanks for the great blog!

Hey! I heard of your blog on Cooper Laurence. I was really excited to hear about it considering I am always finding ways to save money!!
I have an 18 month old and I am 37 weeks pregnant, so we consume a ton of milk. I have probably earned 6 or 7 gallons of milk for free. The milk is about 40 cents more a gallon at walmart. I did the math, and still save more money by purchasing the majority of our milk at Food Lion.
I really have enjoyed your website. I look foward to checking it out in the future!!!

Jessica: If Aldi has a lot of things that you use and they’re cheaper, then maybe you could consider going there once a month and stocking up. If it’s not worth it, then I certainly wouldn’t go. I mostly shop at Food Lion and Lowe’s Foods because they’re not far from my home. Occasionally, I’ll stop by Wal-Mart for some things I can’t get at other places.

Tami: Was the $5 coupon a rebate for the MVP card?
Jessica: Thanks for subscribing. I’m glad you found us.
Katy: Welcome! It just dawned on me that it’s Thursday. I’m so mad at myself for missing Cooper’s show. My days have been off this week. I think it’s the time change. I can’t seem to get on track. I’ll have to listen to the podcast. Anyway, I’m glad you found us!

I love my food lion when things are on sale but so far, if you have a Sam’s, their milk is less than $3 a gallon.
