Thrifty ways to ensure a comfortable retirement.

by kellys on July 7th, 2006

I sometimes sit and ponder how long we will have to work. With all the talk in the US about retirement and Social Security options, I get overwhelmed. Everybody has ideas on how to save enough money for retirement. The general idea is to do your best to get out of debt and then save enough to cover at least 80% of your income. Humberto Cruz from JSOnline has an informative article, “A few thrifty habits will ensure that you don’t have to work forever”, on how to make sure you can retire without feeling the pinch every day. He talks about “sacrifices” that don’t seem like sacrifices to me.

If you can’t bear to cut down on eating out, go out to lunch rather than dinner. Don’t be shy about asking for doggy bags. (Most restaurant portions are too big anyway. Why throw out good food?)

This is one of my favorites of Cruz’ ideas from the article. You know how much I love to eat out. This way I don’t have to feel as if I am sacrificing.

By the way, my DH took me to a fabulous dinner tonight at a local Japanese restaurant. It was a very nice treat. I am totally blessed.
