The secret to Christmas shopping with cash

by kellys on September 15th, 2006

Ok, I mentioned my secret trick for Christmas shopping.  It’s too early to talk Christmas shopping, you say?!  Never, as I am famous for starting my shopping in June. That way I can pay cash for everything without my wallet hurting drastically.  My list has been dwindled down to less than 40 gifts now.  I have a big family.

So what is my trick?  Well, the first thing I do is set aside a little bit of money every month.  That way I don’t have to find it all at once.  Then I actually make my list and tuck it away because for the last 4 years, my mother-in-law and I, along with various sister-in-laws depending on who is in town, go shopping on Black Friday.  That’s the day after Thanksgiving for all of you scaredy cats.  I have never waited in line longer than 20 minutes and inevitably, there is another discount given at the register that wasn’t posted.  I love that part!

Try it.  You will save more than you will expect and the headaches aren’t there as you would expect.  Tip:  park and walk.

I used to start shopping after Christmas. January or February is a great time to start shopping for toys. The stores clearance them down after Christmas. Then when your child’s birthday, Easter, potty breakthrough, etc. comes along, you will have something for them. Hmmmm, that sounds like a good post for another time.

Funny thing, I inadvertantly said ‘now that it’s christmas time’ to the kids the other day and they all went freaking crazy. I meant ‘now that it’s time to start thinking about purchases for christmas…’ Now they’re all hyped up about christmas LOL

As a teacher I learned a long time ago NOT to mention Christmas to kids. Some teachers would do a countdown to Christmas everyday with their kids. I was like, “Are you crazy????!!!”. Then the kids would all be wound up. Just the word sets them off. LOL
