Seatbelts Save Lives
My friend Nancy sent me a link today about carseats and seat belts. It was a very moving and emotional video and I think you should take a look at it too.
When my first child was born my husband and I bought the Cosco Alpha Omega Elite carseat. The weight limit is 80 lbs. The carseat was $150, which seemed like a lot, but we agreed it was a thrifty buy for the amount of use it would receive. We decided we could save money in the long run by not having to buy multiple carseats.
We have both of our children in the Cosco Alpha Omega Elite carseats now. The carseats can be used front and rear facing. This carseat also had a very high Consumer Reports rating.
There is also a Britax carseat that goes up to 80 lbs. As to my knowledge, there are not many 5 point harness carseats that can be used for this weight.
Please take a look at the video. This information could save your child’s life.

That is too sad! The problem is that my car has no tether attachments since it is older. That doesn’t make me feel any better.

I don’t think my van has tethers either. (Hubby is in charge of carseats.) But at least if your child has the 5 point harness too then if the seatbelt comes unlatched she will still have the protection of the carseat.

Here in Canada I think tethers are required by law. If your child is in a 5-point harness but not tethered, and the seatbelt broke as in this case, the car seat makes your child a heavier projectile and they will travel further in an accident. If your vehicle does not have a tether bolt, you should be able to get it installed by the dealer.

Nicki: All new vehicles in the U.S. must have tethers, but the older cars don’t have them.
It’s nice that safety standards are increasing.

Wow! What a powerful story. Thank you for sharing that with us. I have posted it on my blog on myspace for others to read as well.
Unfourtuantely, I have suffered a great loss as well. I stopped at an accidnet to help where three people were ejected. Two adult and a child of eighteen months, back in feburary of this year.
She was, like your son properely restrained, but for some reason, b/c of the impact of the crash, came unharness and was ejected and thrown through from the car.
Her injuires were devistating. Both her and her young mother died instantly as I tried to revive them But the memory of that day haunts me forever.
I am a huge advocate for everyone, now , not just friends.. to wear seatbelts– as I continue to drive by accidents on a regualr basis and see the difference between people who are belted and those are not.
SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES! And as nurse I can attest to this.
Everyone in that car who was wearing a seatbelt that day, lived with only minor injuries… and it is a testament to how powerful they can be when used properly.
Do you know if there was ever a manufacurs defect out about this ?

Laura: Sorry you had to witness such a horrible accident where lives were lost. Fortunately, the video above was not of my son. It was sent to me by a friend to remind us to use carseats and seat belts properly. I don’t know if there are any manufacturer’s defects. It seems the standards for safety continued to be raised though. Thanks for commenting.
