Saving Money with Coupons

by Karen on July 31st, 2007

easy upsToday I went to Target with the coupons that my aunt sent me.  She sent me two $3 coupons for Pampers Easy Ups, $1.50 coupon for Pampers swimpants, and a $5 Target coupon for purchasing Pampers diapers and wipes (100 count or more).

I have to say that I really hate coupon shopping with the kids.  They were aggravating one another and whining.  Cuddlebug kept crying and saying, “Out, out, out!”.  What’s a mom to do in the store?  I needed quiet so that I could compare prices and find the best deal.  I certainly couldn’t let Cuddlebug out of the cart.  I can just see him taking all the packs of diapers off the shelf.  Ugh!  Anyway . . .

I didn’t end up using the $1.50 coupon for the swimpants because they had a coupon on the package for $2 off.  That made the package $4.49 for 12 instead of $6.49.  I also compared the price per unit in the jumbo pack of Easy Ups versus the price of the value/mega pack.  The larger mega pack was cheaper per unit, but with the coupon, the smaller jumbo pack was a better deal.  Cool.  So, I bought 2 packages and saved $3 on each pack.  I got each pack for $6.54, rather than $9.54.

While I was shopping on the diaper aisle, I was glad to see $2 coupons attached to the Luvs diapers.  That made each pack $5.99.  I bought 2 packages of those since they were cheaper than the Sam’s brand that I usually buy.

Next, I had to find some Pampers wipes in order to use the $5 Target coupon.  I usually buy a case of wipes from Sam’s (their brand).  They are comparable to Huggies.  I don’t normally buy Pampers wipes because I find them to be thin and flimsy.  Fortunately, Target had a case of Pampers Swipers on clearance.  They’re supposed to be thicker.

I brought home 2 packs of Easy Ups, 1 pack swimpants, 2 packs diapers, and 1 case of wipes.  I ended up saving $17.  Pretty good, I think.  It would have been better if the Easy Ups had been on sale.

Cuddlebug has been using the potty for about a month now.  He’s not completely potty trained, but he’s certainly helped to cut back on our purchases of diapers and wipes.  Hopefully, the stuff I bought today will last us a while.

While I was at Target, I also found a few summer shirts for Alligator.  They were 75% off.  I got her a cute beaded tank top for $1.24 and a short sleeved t-shirt for $1.48.  Now is the time to take advantage of the summer clearance sales and start shopping for next summer.

I can’t believed you managed to do all that with both kids!

I know. It seems the past month or two, whenever I take them to the store they act horribly!!! It drives me insane. Over the weekend, Harris Teeter had triple coupons, but I couldn’t go. I just couldn’t bare the thought of going shopping with them. I lost out on all those savings. :(

I totally understand and I only had 1. Now that I have 2, I vote for shopping when they are asleep or with Daddy. You did a great job! Sometimes I feel liek a pretend mommy because I just don’t go there unless I have MM with me. It’s too much. I will figure it all out eventually but right now I am jsut grateful for help. I really wish everyone had a Martha or MM.

I have 4.5 kids & I don’t go shopping with them, my DH and I usually go shopping alone… It’s like dating only we are doing something useful. We took 3 of the kids to Piggly Wiggly this weekend and our 3 year old tried to mow stuff down with the minicart ( why do grocery stores make those- I would think they are liabilities?) Also why do grocery stores make carts for kids that look race cars? Again aren’t they worried about the liability. Believe me my children are very well behaved, they don’t whine in stores or beg, but you can’t give children mini shopping carts or put them in grocery carts that look hot rods- and not expect them to want to drag race down the aisles… PS Thanks for the comment & the email (I didn’t even know about Google alerts- let alone that I was on there)!- Michelle

Piggly Wiggly . . . oh, that brings back memories. We had 3 PWs in my hometown, but now there is only 1. My mom still shops there. She says they have the best bread in town.

Lately, my 2 have been acting horrible in the store. My 2 year old is aggressive towards his sister sometimes and she intentionally annoys him (and me!!!). I keep telling her to quit b/c he will retaliate, but she doesn’t listen. I just had to intervene a few minutes ago b/c he pulled her hair and then again b/c he bit her! Ahhhh! Calgon . . .
