Save time or money with your employment?

by kellys on July 17th, 2006

When I think of things that have saved us sanity, one shining example tends to stand out in my mind.  A few years ago my job was insane!  I was working 15 days on and 2 days off then 19 on again.  Thank goodness I didn’t have a child.  I made decent money and enjoyed what I did.  However, I found myself not seeing my husband for days at a time.  Talking on the telephone was not what I got married for.  I knew then that I had to find a new job.  A great friend of mine helped me get a great job with nights, weekends, and holidays off.  However, I took a 50% pay cut.  Wondering what this has to do with being frugal?  Sometimes, you just need to prioritize.  We saved money by not needing to eat out so much since we were able to cook, and we didn’t feel the need to numb our minds with so many movies.  We saved a fortune in late fees since we actually had time to watch them.  Sometimes you need to decide whether your time is worth loosing money or if loosing money is worth reclaiming your time. My DH and I voted for reclaiming our time.  It was the right decision for us.

Kelly - you opened a huge can of worms with me but you could not have said that any better. In my world, I am the DH. My wife stays home to manage the house and kids but I am working at least 18 hours per day. I have a normal job but I also do extra-things like [try to] start businesses or contribute to Dumb Little Man.

The time is coming (very soon) where I say this is not worth it and I begin to enjoy the things I miss most about my wife.

Being frugal does not require you to have a certain income level. Frugal means you live within your means whether your income is $30K/year or $300K/year. I know a ton of “frugals” that are worth millions, but their marriage is terrible and their kids don’t know them. I am not willing to do that.

Sorry for the novel - you touched a nerve.

Novels are totally acceptable. My husband works long hours so that I only work 2 days a week. I wish he wouldn’t work so hard, but I am grateful that his work allows me to stay home. Where his work might differ with yours is that I can think of maybe 4 nights where his work has kept him from playing with the baby for a little bit before she goes to bed. Make sure you always give your kids kisses before they go to bed. They will remember that more than they will that you work a lot.
