Return only with a receipt

by kellys on January 23rd, 2008

I hate returning anything because I am not good at keeping receipts.  I had Little Man’s humidifier stop working on me so I was going to take it back to the store since it was a Wal-Mart only product.  They only wanted to give me $5 for it and I totally understand why.  It was a seasonal item and I didn’t have a receipt.  But I got so mad at myself that I just left it there.  Failure on my part, I know.

4 opinions for Return only with a receipt

Did you see that Macy’s now affixes a separate bar code on clothing tags for return without receipt? I was checking out with a bunch of winter clothes for NEXT winter for my 2 year old, and every time the cashier scanned an item, she put a second bar code on the tag. I asked her about it, and she said it was for returns. The tag must still be attached to the clothing, and it must include the original bar code plus the ‘return’ bar code. If the item gets returned/exchanged, the person returning the item will get the full amount paid for the item rather than the adjusted value. I wish other stores would do this. It takes a bit more time to check out, but it’s so nice to not have to ask for gift receipts and then have to keep track of them!

PS - I chuckled inside because I was paying between $1-3 for each item scanned… hardly worth the extra effort, but still nice!

Oh, get this. This made me furious!

My sister and I and a group of women (mostly her family) always go shopping for Christmas. It’s not really Christmas shopping because we usually pick some mall that we would never go to alone because it’s too far away and who drives that far just to shop for yourself, right? And we always end up just shopping for ourselves because how much Christmas shopping can you really do at the mall where the main items sold are clothes.

Anyway, I bought a top at a store (can’t remember the store off the top of my head) that I, of course, had never been to before. It was on sale. Something like buy two for $15 or something. I tried one on and just grabbed a second one, different color, same size.

Well, I get home, I’m trying everything on that I bought that day and, wouldn’t you know, the second top didn’t fit! It wasn’t a huge deal because I had to go back to that town, oddly enough, because the one store that I needed to go to (and there isn’t one anywhere near where I live) was across the street from the mall and down a little ways. Well, we didn’t get to that store because we had a huge snow storm come in that very day and had to get headed back home.

When I went back to that town, not two weeks later, I went to return the top. Yeah, they do NOT refund your money…at all! And, of course, I didn’t pay attention to the return policy prior to buying. I mean, how could I? It’s printed on your receipt! Usually, a store gives you at least 30 days or something. They only give store vouchers or even exchanges.

I just happened to be in a huge hurry. The store didn’t really have a lot to offer anyway. I didn’t feel like trying something else on. I really had to meet someone so I really did not have time to mess with this. All I really wanted was my money back which I did not get! Instead, I got a voucher to a store that I will never use because I never shop in that town, there isn’t one near us and I really didn’t like most of their merchandise.

The cashier was kind enough to tell me, however, that there are a lot of stores doing this now. So, I guess my advice is, unless you shop there frequently and know the return policy, be careful.

I had to comment again to add that this happened to me when purchasing online too. I mean, of course, it was too good to be true. I came across an online store where everything was $15 or less. http://store.buyhotcouture.com/

It sounded awesome, the clothes were cool. ALWAYS CHECK THE RETURN POLICY FIRST. Lesson learned!
    This is there return policy:
    Return Policy
100% Satisfaction, 100% of The Time!

In order to maintain our low prices, returns will not be accepted. However, we will honor even exchanges “same item, different size” only, within 10 days from the day we shipped you your order on all unworn items. In the event that we do not have your size available we will then allow you to exchange for a different item. Any exchange that is received after the 10 day period will be refused. All returns require an RMA #. To receive your RMA # please Email us and we will give you the address and instructions on how to exchange. Any return that does not have an RMA # will be refused.

UGH!!! I thought the standard was 30 days. By the time I checked the return policy, it had been 15 days. Too late! And all three items I purchased didn’t fit!

See! I know. I hate returning things in general, but to fight because of my lack of a receipt is worse.
