Pat Veretto from About.com on frugal living.
If you have read my blog for any length of time, you know how much I love About.com. Well, recently I asked Pat to take some time out of her tight schedule to do a short interview with me. I loved her answers and knew you would too. Check it out and then check out About.com.
Q. What inspired you to become so frugal?
A. I like to say that I was born frugal. I get a kick out of finding ways to do
things or get things at low cost or free. It’s just in my blood, I guess.Q. What is your biggest struggle when trying to stay thrifty?
A. Boredom. I like change (as we all do, to some extent), and living a rather
quiet life, I find myself wanting to buy something new just for the sake of
buying something new, or wanting to redecorate or do some (expensive)
landscaping, not because of any need, but because I’m bored.
Q. What is your favorite success story with saving time and money?
A. I don’t have any one favorite, but one thing I enjoy is seeing if I can
serve a full meal without it costing anything. (garden produce, meat that
was given to me, salt from someone else’s fast food meal, etc.)
Q. If you had one thing to tell everybody trying to stay true to saving
money, what would it be?
A. Track your expenses. Account for every penny you spend and you’ll soon see
the waste, and you’ll probably feel it. It will embarrass or anger you to
think that you’re throwing money out the window when you want or need it for
something else.
Q. Can you think of any funny situation you have found yourself in during
your pursuit of frugality?
A. I’m sure there have been many, but I can’t think of anything at the moment.

I often try to make a meal for all of us on one euro or less. It’s a challenge and even if we had a garden, I’m not sure I could do it for nothing.

I left About in January and I’m now semi retired, but I couldn’t quit writing about frugal living (among other things)!
