It’s MY 60 Cents
I haven’t used The Grocery Game in a few weeks. I have such a large stockpile that I’m planning my weekly menus using what I have and just picking up a few things that we need.
Monday night I ran into Wal-Mart to get the few things we needed to complete our meals, along with the bread and other necessities. While I was there I decided to pick up a roll of the Pillsbury orange cinnamon rolls. They would be a nice treat for Saturday morning. I was going to get the WM brand, but the Pillsbury brand was the same price as the generic. Then I saw some Lender’s bagels on sale for 98 cents and I grabbed some of those.
After leaving the register, I checked my receipt (as I always do). I usually try to check it while the stuff is being rung up, but when you have kids with you, it’s not the easiest thing to do. I noticed I was charged $1.88 for the Pillsbury rolls and $1.18 for the Lender’s bagels. That’s 58 cents (plus tax) that I was overcharged!
Before I went up to the customer service desk, I decided to leave my husband with the kids while I ran back to double check the prices. Sure enough, I was overcharged. I went to the customer service desk for my refund. The thought came to me to let it go and leave, but then I just couldn’t shake the thought, “That’s MY 60 cents!”. That’s not Wal-Mart’s 60 cents. They posted a price and they need to live by it.
I just can’t help it. My mom instilled this value of money into me. I’ve seen her go back up to the register many times for an over charge.
I’m curious. How many of you would have walked away without the refund? Have you gone back up to the counter when you’ve been over charged?

It really depends on how much it is and how big of a hurry I’m in or how busy customer service is. At WM it’s often a big pain to go get a refund as the lines are usually forever and a day long. So for 60 cents I might walk away if the line was long. I hate having my money and time taken because a store can’t get their computers right. It’s a pet peeve of mine.

nope. I would get the money. It makes me angry when that happens. If they over charge you at Krogers you get the item free.

You touched a nerve in our family!! We always check and get the money. Both of sets of our parents instilled that in us. As for WalMart, our humble burg of around 55,000 people now has 2 SuperCenters. Our county has 3!! I’m not usually a fan, but I do go every once in a while. Either way, it’s frustrating that they are taking over w/business practices like the one you mentioned. Good for you for getting your 60 cents! Did the person at the service desk apologize or give you a weird look?

Good for you two! I also get annoyed with the stockers put the items in the wrong places. You shouldn’t have to check the item with the UPC code before you buy it.
Nope, no apology. I can’t get an apology out of Target either though. What ever happened to, “I’m sorry that happened. I’m sorry for your inconvenience. We’ll get that taken care of.”
I try not to go into WM too often either, but sometimes there are things that you can’t get anywhere else.

Walmart has the same policy. If an item rings up wrong, they should have used a certain button to fix the price, that would have given you the item free, up to $3 off.

Veggiemom: WM used to have that policy posted and in the past when I tried to use it, the cashiers would argue with me even though the policy was posted. They no longer post the policy and I’ve been told that it’s no longer active. Is that not true?
I’m sure we all could write a big article about Customer No-Service!

I go back for the money any time I can. It drives me crazy when I can’t monitor the prices because they’re already checking while I unload the basket. I know they’re just being efficient, but still…

Most of the time have 3 kids in tow - the oldest of which is 5. I don’t check my receipt until after they’re in the car and buckled in their carseats. It’s very hard to find the motivation to go back for the refund. I’ve gone back the next day for the refund though.

At some point, I have to consider how much my time is worth, a habit I picked up working in a copy shop (most people will forgo the price of a two cent staple on thousands of dollars, not realizing how much time they will spend accomplishing the result at home). I know how long it usually takes to get a price adjustment. If I don’t notice in line, and it doesn’t occur to me that my total is off, I usually just let it go.

I always call once I get home since it is easier to get my refund or free food from a fast food joint if they get my order wrong. Then I can go at MY convenience. Now that is worth my 60 cents.

I have had that problem at Ingles at the UScan. It never gives me the right change back. Even if it one or two pennies, I ask for my change. Just think how much money they make off of people if that happens even to just every other customer. So yes, take the time!

I ALWAYS go back. Of the places I shop WM is the worst about this! I hate to think of all that money that customers are giving to the WalMart corporation. Think about it: if 1 out of 10 customers is “accidentally” charged an additional 60 cents how many billions of dollars does that total in a year? I work hard for my money, I can find a much better place to donate it than Wal Mart!

I absolutely go back. Many times stores will refund the full amount of the product if it’s incorrect in the system, so not only do you get your 60 cents back, you get the product for free.

One time I was charged the wrong price for frozen turkey burgers. They didn’t charge me for the posted price but gave me all the money back that I was charged plus they gave me the item for free!!
