Is Your Debt Making You Depressed?
Do you buy yourself things as a reward on a regular basis, for such minor events as “payday” or “I got through work without killing anyone day”?
Do you think to yourself “I shouldn’t be spending this money,” but you do so anyway?
Do you owe so much money to various people that you can’t conceive of how to begin paying it off?
I used to feel like we would never get out debt. It seemed no matter what we did, we could never get ahead. And when there was a little extra money, it seemed as though the car would break down or something major would happen and we would need the money for that particular problem.
We are still not completely out of debt, but we are getting there. It has been a hard road and we have learned from many stupid mistakes.
Debt can weigh you down, leaving you feel hopeless and depressed. I truly believe that if you owe money then you are a slave to your lendor.
If you feel like any of this applies to you, then please check out Trent’s posting on Money and Depression. He has some encouraging ways to help you get started toward finding your way out of the mess.

It’s kind of scary because it leaves us with less of a cushion… but I don’t have a credit card. Not one. If I can’t afford it, I don’t buy it.
I’ve made a decision to see how little I can buy new in 2007. I’m all about yard sales, eBay, and freecycle. I’m going to pay off the debt my husband left me with, and start fresh this year. Hurray for you, to be so close to being debt free!
Happy new year!

All I owe on right now is my student loans. I owe less than $1,000 on them. Of course, we also owe on our house, but I consider that a given. Maybe one day we won’t even owe on our house.
I get pretty aggravated when I go to Target, Sears, Belk, etc. and they ask me if I want to apply for a credit card so that I can save 10% on my purchase. I feel like saying, “No, I don’t want to save $1 so that I can get a credit card and harm my credit score by having a bunch of small department store cards.”

This definitely was something I struggled with in the past. I am still in debt, but one thing that really helped me was when one of the other pastors at our church ran Financial Peace University for a few weeks. This was put together by Dave Ramsey (www.daveramsey.com) and is an amazing resource. It helped me to know that I could get out of debt and I didn’t have to live in that bondage. My wife and I are now looking at being debt free in less than 2 years (including student loans).

We are getting ready to have the Financial Peace University classes at our church. They were talking about it at church last night, but I was with the youth group, so I missed out. I’m sure taking the classes will help change our perspective on a lot of things.
