In search of a MiniVan
I have talked about our search for a minivan before. Karen blasted me for wanting a Kia Sedona. Well, yesterday, I found a deal of a deal! I was looking at the local paper and found a 2000 Windstar with only 70k miles for $5999. The blue book value was around $8000. I thought something was up so when I went to the dealership to see it, the sticker on it was $9999. First of all, that was way over priced! Then I asked to see the van for $5999. The salesman said that it was a misprint and that they had the van listed as $9999 but since it was incorrectly advertised, he would have to honor it. MAN I WANTED THAT VAN. But when we went to drive it, there was something wrong with the engine and the electric locks were not working. So we didn’t get it. But man, what a deal if it would have been a good van. The guy said he was going to take it off the lot until the add stopped running since he really couldn’t afford to sell it at that price.
Thrifty living foiled again. DARN IT! I’ll keep you in the loop.

You can’t go wrong with a used Toyota Sienna, Honda Odessey or a Chrysler Town and Country (Dodge Caravan). You can get good deals on the Toyota and Honda pre-owned cars at many lots across the country. Many of them even come with great warranties.
Just understand that when you are talking about a minivan in that price range mentioned above, you are EXTREMELY likely to get what you pay for.
Check out Consumer Reports…it just might help you find a good deal somewhere by arming you with all of the facts.

You can buy a 2006/2007 base model Chrysler T&C for about 10K… if you shop around…
For 6K, you should be able to buy a 2003 or 2004 Ford Windstar…

(email me if you have any questions… we just purchased a newer mini van w/ cash… 2007, less than 30K miles, less than 11K…)

Oh yeah… for what it’s worth, the KIA is the second highest rated mini van for 2007 and 2008… several sites even have it listed as the safest…

We bought our 2003 Kia Sedona b/c it had one of the safest ratings and it had the warranty. I should have known better than to do something I said I’d never do. I said I’d never buy another brand new vehicle. I was really disappointed when I found out we were only getting 14 mpg!!! Talk about a dent in our budget. We were spending so much money on gas. When we tried to sell it two years later, no one wanted to buy it. They don’t hold their value. We lost so much money on that van!

They really are nice vans…too bad they don’t hold their value at all.
