How Much Will You Spend on Halloween?

by Karen on October 11th, 2007

halloweenA new survey released by Visa Inc. shows that 73% of Americans celebrate and spend money on Halloween.  The average family will spend $40 on candy and decorations.  Parents with children under 18 will spend $54 on candy and decorations.  Dads are said to spend more than moms.

I guess how much you spend depends upon where you live.  I’m sure that in the last 10 years, we haven’t had more than 10 children at our house trick-or-treating.  Maybe it’s because there are so many church and school festivals and other activities going on.

I have a friend that lives in a neighborhood that has a few hundred houses.  She says that every year she spends more than $100 on candy and each year she runs out.  Can you imagine?

So, we want to know.  How much money do you spend on Halloween?  Please vote in the poll and leave any comments below.

I haven’t had any kids really in the past 5 years. It is strange.

I can see spending money on decorating. We’re to the point now where we have one of the large plastic tubs of just halloween decor.

    That doesn’t even count costumes?

I have no idea how much candy will be required in our neighborhood. I’ll have to ask around. However, the average # of kids per house here seems to be about 4, and there are LOTS of houses close together, so its prime trick or treating grounds! Scary.

    Hi.

I live in Arizona and we have a couple of neighborhoods in a row where kids from all the houses come around to our doors. We usually spend about $25.00 on candy. I don’t decorate for Halloween anymore because we hang out in the garage and put on Harry Potter Movies for the trick-or-treaters to enjoy when they come to visit. Once we are out of candy, we close the garage and turn out the lights.

We also take our kids around before we even start so it limits the amount of time we spend “giving.”

If you create a budget for what you want to give out, then use coupons and start watching for sales in the summer, you can save money on the treats.

This year I’m going to give away some healthier treats. I wonder if the kids will still like us! :) I loved it last year when my kids received goldfish, graham crackers and pretzels!!

Yes, you can watch the sales and use coupons to save a lot of money on the candy. CVS had some candy buy 1 get 1 free this week and then there was a coupon in the paper.

I like the little Snyder’s pretzel bags they sell at Sam’s. They also have little things of play doh. It’s good that people are giving out different things now.

You can also go after Halloween this year and pick up necklaces, stickers, and trinkets on clearance for next year.

We don’t get many trick-or-treaters, so I usually only buy a few little bags of candy (maybe $10-15 worth). I know I’ll end up eating the excess, and it’s better if that isn’t too much. I’d probably spend a lot more if I had kids, because then we’d be buying decorations and costume supplies, but I get to do that part with the kids I babysit right now so I don’t bother with it at home.
