Find a Local Discount Grocery Store

by Karen on March 21st, 2008

Today we had to take the kitty to get her stitches out and on the way home we spotted a new scratch and dent grocery store.  I told hubby that we didn’t need to go in because we did not have anymore room in our cabinets.  lol  I told him I was holding out for triple coupon day.  I’m glad we went inside though.  Here are a few of the bargains we found:

  • Betty Crocker Warm Delights  @ .25 - had just gone out of date
  • 39 oz canister of Swiss Miss hot chocolate @ 1.25 - the can was dented.  This will be perfect for church, since some people prefer hot chocolate instead of coffee.
  • Honey Maid graham crackers @ .50 - I got these for the children’s class at church.
  • 24 oz bottle of Honey @ 1.10.  Yay, I’ve been going through a lot of honey lately with my hot tea.
  • 6 pk of triple blade razors @ 1.25.  What a deal!
  • Boudreaux’s Butt Paste @ .75.  Yes, it is still in date.  The box was slightly dented on the corner.  BTW, this is good stuff.  Oprah even recommends it.
  • Oral B CrossAction power toothbrush @ 1.25.  I’m sure that this toothbrush normally costs at least $6-7.
  • 250 ibuprofen @ 1.00
  • Nyquil @ 1.00
  • Tidy Cat cat litter @ 2.50 - This beats paying $4.00 anyday.

These are just a few of the deals we got.  We had a very nice experience at this store.

I encourage you to ask around and see if there are discount grocery stores in your area.  Yes, there are some bad ones out there, but finding a good one is worth the effort.

Do you shop at discount grocery stores?  What kind of experiences have you had?

I don’t know of any chain discount stores other than Go Go Grocery Outlet. The others are all locally owned. I’m not even sure how many grocery outlets there are. Perhaps you could google grocery outlet or discount grocery store, along with your state and see what comes up. Sometimes, the best thing to do is just to ask others in your area. Most grocery stores have someone that they sell their merchandise to fairly cheaply. The problem is, these people may or may not be local sellers. For instance, one of the local discount stores here buys from other stores that are an hour away. Word of mouth is probably your best bet. I hope this makes sense. I’m tired and I should go to bed earlier!

I want one of those! We have a bread store but it’s not that good.

Kelly: There is (or was, not sure) a really good bread store about 20 minutes or so from you. I used to stop there at least once a week on my way home from work. I wonder if it’s still there and if the prices are still good.

That sounds wonderful! I wish we had something like that in our area. The only thing we have is a bread outlet that is filled with crappy, out of date white bread. I won’t eat white bread even if it is in date, so why buy it out of date?

This town is SO not frugal friendly. :(

same here…we have several close by bread outlets with snack cakes and such. they used to be dirt cheap and it was really worthwhile to shop there…but over the years their prices have skyrocketed to the point that it’s not a frugal choice to purchase their merchandise (not to mention the quality has gone down hill). oh well, guess i’ll just stcik to my old methods.

I know what you mean. My husband told the owner of the store today that he liked his store and that it truly was a discount store. A lot of “discount stores” now are selling crappy looking food that is way out of date and charging almost retail prices. I don’t know how they’re staying in business.

Love, love, love our “bent can” grocery. It takes me almost an hour to get there but the deals are definitely worth the drive. I’m going next week at the end of the week. I do a lot better on Thursday or Friday because they stock everything on Tues. and Wed. So it is definitely worth it.
