Diaper Champ Wins My Vote

by Karen on September 16th, 2006

Diaper ChampI remember several years ago visiting my friend Robyn (check out her mommy blog) and at the bottom of her stairs was a long snake like looking thing.  I know I asked Robyn what in the world that thing was and soon discovered it was the bag part of a Diaper Genie.

Well, being pregnant with my first child, my DH and I went to Target and got the scanner because we were going to register for things that we later found out we didn’t need.  LOL  We knew we needed a diaper pail of some sort and a Diaper Genie was the only one that Target had available, so we registered for it.

I received a Diaper Genie from my MIL and soon realized the Diaper Genie was not all I thought it would be.  For some reason, the cutting blade on mine didn’t seem to work very well and I would have to get the scissors out every time I had to change the bags, which was very often, I thought.  Then I became annoyed by how often I had to change the bags, the poor cutting system, the length of the snake like things, and soon after I became aware of the costs of the bags!!!  I was just not impressed.

One day while my DH and I were at Babies R Us we discovered the Diaper Champ. We were impressed that it took regular kitchen trash bags, had an easy to use flip handle, and had a seal to keep out the odors.  According to the description, it even holds cloth diapers.

We are now using our 3 year old Diaper Champ with our second child.  We have definitely gotten plenty of use from it.  A year or so ago the seal broke, but it still keeps the smell contained.  We only change the bag once a week and we don’t have to fight with refilling it or cutting anything.  It a time and money saver, plus you don’t feel bad about yourself later for having bad thoughts while changing the bag.  The diaper champ wins my vote!

In my opinion today’s Diaper Genie sucks. The one I had back then was used when I bought it, so it was several years old (the second model I think). It actually had the normal size mouth, not the wide-mouth that most have today. They don’t even sell the refills for mine anymore locally.

We bought the new Diaper Genies for the church and they are horrible. The blade stinks and you need an engineering degree to operate it. It’s ALWAYS full when someone new stays with the babies because the NOOBs can’t figure out how to empty it. Ugh.

A trash can with a supply of ziplock bags is cheaper and easier LOL That’s what I use now at my house. I still have that genie, but it’s in a closet.

I really should sit it out by the road for the trash man.

Our church has bought those diaper sacks that you can get at Babies R Us or Dollar Tree. Of course, they’re cheaper at Dollar Tree. You can get 100 of them for $1. They’re also scented. When we have stinky diapers at church we just wrap them up in one of those bags and throw it in the trash. It really helps on keeping the smell contained.

I’ll have to look at the diaper sacks but we also got the Daiper Champ after Karen told us about hers. We love it and we only change it once a week as well. Used to, unless my DD has a bad week with her diapers, we never smell anything. Now I either empty the diapre before I put it in the pail or I wrap it in a plastic bag from Wal-Mart.

I try to flush the stinky in the potty too. It really helps with the smell.

I also try to keep some of those diaper sacks in the van for if we have a stinky while out and about. They’re great for trash in the van too.
