A frugal way to organize my closets

by kellys on April 7th, 2007

I have talked to you throughout our pregnancy about the ways I have tried to save money. I will give you a run down when the baby gets here. The latest frugal thing I have been working on is the closets. I want to organize our closets and try to get as much stuff in the closets as possible to declutter the nursery.

So I went to the Closet Storage Organizer store in town. I was just curious as to how much it would cost to get a simple 24” set of shelves in the middle, a 4’ pole on one side and two 4’ poles on the other side for a double shelf. I thought it was going to be around $200 but got the laugh of the day when the guy came back with an estimate of $705! Can you believe it! $705!

I went to Lowe’s and Home Depot and found the same organizer for under $100. It always makes me feel good to get a great deal. I was budgeting for around $150 for organizers and baskets per closet. I’ll let you know how I do.

I totally agree that $705 is rediculous but that must be routine for everyone else. I am so glad I am not everyone else.

Since your talking closet organization and in reference to babies… I want to share what I learned with my daughters closet and wish that I had figured out with my son.

Especially with the first year there are so many size changes for clothes. In my daughters closets, Actually due to no closet space 2 cheap white pantry/armoires. I put 2 rods in one for hanging clothes. The other is 4 shelves. I restricted my clothes purchases for each size ti fit on one shelf and one rod. I bought WAY too many clothes for my son. So this is a visual boundary.

So when she changes to the next size the new size is on the next shelf down and I can toss the outgrown clothes into a labeled tote to store in the attic for any future babies. Then shift everything up. I have 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 12 month all in 2 small cabinets.

It’s so much easier knowing that all the clothes are right there to switch out. It was such a hassle to do with my sons clothes and so I procrastinated until his clothes were way too small. Plus then I can see at a glance what kinds of things I’m low on for my next sizes and watch out for them at garage sales. :o)
